There are a lot of benefits to be enjoyed when you put others before yourself. Putting others first promotes your overall satisfaction with life, and helps you bond with the people around you. While helping others is something we should all do, you must be careful—if you do not tend to your own needs, it can have a negative effect. While putting yourself first may seem selfish, it is not; burnout is one of the biggest issues people have to deal with if they do not take care of themselves.
If you feel stretched/exhausted, it is likely because you have not relaxed and replenished your energy. While we believe in putting the needs of others before our own, it can be counterproductive if you cannot tend to your spiritual, physical, and mental well-being.
If you have people pulling at you in every direction, you will soon find yourself exhausted, resulting in you being of little/no use to anybody. You may even feel guilty for taking a break now and again, but if you want what is best for you and your loved ones, you must take care of yourself.
Putting yourself first does not mean never doing anything for someone else, it simply means you should make sure your own needs are met before you try to meet the needs of others—this can be a difficult balance to strike, but finding a way to do it is important. If you are having trouble figuring out how to put yourself first, here are five tips to help you.
Making time for yourself may seem like a no-brainer, but it is important to ensure that you are taking time out regularly. Whether you take a few minutes to relax and unwind or take an entire day to yourself every once in a while, make sure you make time for yourself.
To ensure that you can sometimes put yourself first, set boundaries with the people in your life. If someone constantly asks for favours or expects you to drop everything for them, it is time to set some boundaries. Explain that you need some time for yourself and they need to respect your wishes.
Saying no can be difficult for some people, but it is important to learn how to say no when you need to. If you do not want to do something, do not feel as though you have to say yes just because someone asks you to.
Saying no is not something that comes easy to most people, even if it is in their best interest. Nevertheless, you must be able to if you do not want people to take advantage of you and/or deplete your energy. Setting boundaries is important for your mental, spiritual, and physical well-being, so you should never feel guilty for taking the time to heal.
Make sure that you take care of yourself, physically, mentally, and spiritually. Eat healthy, exercise, and make time for activities that make you happy. When you take care of yourself, it will be easier for you to take care of others.
Do not be afraid to seek help when needed. If you are struggling to balance your needs with the needs of others, there is nothing wrong with seeking help. Remember, self-care is important, and putting yourself first will ensure that you can take care of others in the long run.
Your loved ones want to see that you are doing well, the last thing they want is for you to be exhausted/drained because you have not been taking care of yourself. Think about how you would feel if somebody you cared about was not doing well—if this person was helping/supporting you, you would most likely prefer it if they took care of their well-being first. You might even feel guilty if you came to believe that you were contributing to their exhaustion.
Putting your mind/body under stress over a long period of time can wreak havoc on your physiology. At Trusted Psychics, we believe that your well-being should be your top priority because nobody will care more about your needs than you. Stress forces your body to use resources faster, which could be beneficial in an emergency but detrimental in the long term.
The people closest to you will feel the energy you put into the world. When you are happy, your loved ones will be the first to pick up on it, affecting how they interact with you. Naturally, if you are always tired/stressed, how you treat your friends/family will be impacted. In a worst-case scenario, you could end up pushing away your loved ones because being around you has become draining for them.
Considering the needs of others before your own is not a bad thing, nonetheless, you must make sure you can do so without exhausting yourself. No matter how generous you are, there will come a time in which you have to be selfish, otherwise, you will burn yourself out—in fact, taking a break now and again will make you stronger/more reliable.
