The survey also included 143 members of the general population, which makes this scientific study the largest one to date.

One of the main findings of the research is that psychic mediums are more inclined to absorption than other people, a trait linked to immersion in mental/imaginative thinking or experiences of altered consciousness. Mediums are more likely to have unusual auditory experiences, such as hearing voices. Those who experienced absorption or heard voices came to embrace spiritualist beliefs while actively searching for the meaning behind what they were hearing.

Psychic Experiences and Spiritual Beliefs

Researchers from Durham University found that, for the general population, spiritual experiences associated with absorption were linked to spiritual beliefs. During the study, there were no significant differences between spiritualists and non-spiritualists regarding their superstitious beliefs or proneness to visual hallucinations.

Spiritualists only gained interest in the paranormal after they developed/experienced anomalous phenomena. This experience stimulated their curiosity, enhanced their abilities, and urged them to search for its meaning.

How Often Do People Hear the Dead?

Experts from Durham University comprehensively researched how psychic mediums/spiritual people experienced hearing voices. They compared the absorption levels, hallucination-proneness, aspects of their identity, and belief levels in the paranormal.

Approximately 44.6% of spiritualists responding to the survey said they hear the voices of the deceased on a daily basis. A large majority of participants said the experience of auditory spiritual communications is part of their everyday lives and can occur when they are alone, working as professional mediums, or attending church.

Most responding participants who heard voices said that the experience happened inside their heads. However, 37.1% of participants stated that they perceive the voices inside and outside their heads. Higher absorption levels and a greater propensity towards auditory experiences were related to the frequent practice of speaking with the dead.

Does Age Affect Ability to Hear Spirits?

Another area researched was the age of participants when they first experienced clairaudience. Spiritualists reported they started hearing the voices of the deceased at an average of 21.7 years old. However, 18% of the participants said they had experiences like this for as long as they could remember.

What the Study Showed

The experiences of those who participated in the study showed that they have connections to the spirit world due to having psychic experiences early on in life rather than a simple wish to believe. Dr Peter Mosely of Northumbria University, and the study's co-author, said that spiritualists report these unusual experiences happening at an early age and can often control the experiences afterwards.
